Kaneka Turner

Kaneka has served education for more than 21 years. She is currently serving as the lead grade 4 writer with Illustrative Mathematics's (IM), K-5 national curriculum design team. In addition to writing full-time for IM, Kaneka runs a successful educational consulting company, ReImage LLC, that has been in operation since June of 2017. 

Kaneka started an 18 year career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from North Carolina Central University. After teaching for 8 years as an elementary classroom teacher she transitioned to the role of teacher of the gifted and building level curriculum support. 

Three years into classroom teaching Kaneka was invited to study mathematics deeply with TERC, an educational research organization in Cambridge, MA, where she was trained in adult learning and professional learning facilitation. As an independent consultant Kaneka successfully supported more than 25 school districts and thousands of teachers in implementing the Math Investigations curriculum before joining Illustrative Mathematics in 2017.

Kaneka is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College's Math Leadership program and earned a Master of Arts in Math Teaching in 2015. As a member of the first cohort, Kaneka helped to build the current MAMT program. She continues to serve the program as an instructor teaching courses during the school year and summers and also as an independent consultant. 

Kaneka is an experienced speaker who has delivered keynotes for both the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education (OAME).  She speaks on a variety topics related to math education including content, pedagogy and equitable practices. In addition to large scale talks, Kaneka also delivers smaller motivational and educational talks at local conferences and learning series across the nation.

Kaneka started ReImage LLC, in 2017  to offer support to smaller districts, schools and teacher leaders seeking to redefine math teaching and learning. She uses her experience in central office and learning networks as an elementary math specialist and years of coaching and supporting curriculum enactment in buildings to customize professional learning partnerships through ReImage.
